Artist Statement

I love exploring how things that are similar or grouped together can tell a story. I work in different mediums, but I keep coming back to paint because of its versatility. Since I am deeply interested in scale and contrast, abstract shapes often contribute to negative space: paint allows me to layer and investigate this idea. Lately, I have been working mostly from observation and adding my own colors and contrasts.

In my art, I aim to elevate the beauty in the every day and make ordinary moments, places, and objects feel special. I often work in series with a subject or quality of light until it no longer captivates me. This process is like visual brainstorming, allowing me to see how various ideas relate to each other.

As an art teacher, I’m always intrigued by the ideas and work my students create. As a lover of art history, I enjoy visiting museums and galleries and attending workshops: for example The Fauves’ use of vibrant, bold colors is an ongoing source of inspiration.

My favorite pieces are always my current ones, whether I’m sketching, painting, or experimenting. When I was a young artist, I enjoyed working abstractly, using shapes to represent or symbolize other things. This abstract approach has evolved but continues to inform my work, blending observation with imaginative elements.

I hope viewers will feel a connection with the landscape, the sense of light and shadow, the irony of painting everyday objects, the beauty of a flower or seasonal event, the humor in observing unnoticed moments, and the calmness of being outside on a warm day.
